The Rhea
Features
Consumption and marketing
The rhea (also called South American Ostrich) is an animal with great potential for consumption. Its meat is especially consumed – very tender and low in cholesterol – in addition to the leather, feathers, offal and oil extracted from its fat. Their eggs are dull white and can measure up to 10 inchs, being the largest of all birds. A rhea egg is equivalent to 20-24 chicken eggs and weighs between 1 and 2 pounds.
In South America, rhea breeding is presented as an agricultural alternative. In Argentina there are a total of 163 hatcheries.
Its legs, with which it can run at speeds of up to 37 mph, have three toes with important nails, and can measure 1.30 m and weigh 28 kg. Its plumage is a characteristic ash gray with more marked black areas in the males.
Our artisan knives are made in Argentina with rhea fingers from authorized farms, breeding declared of national interest by Law 25.679 of November 27, 2002.
